"Jon's attention to detail, work ethic and professionalism made him a pleasure to work with. Challenges were faced with a positive attitude and solutions were provided, generally with suggestions for making our output even better.

I wouldn't hesitate to recommend Jon and hope to work together again some day."

"Jon Heilman has completed several Flash projects for our website and always has done a great job. I recommended Jon for these projects based on my years of previous experience working with him, and I'm glad I did. Jon has always impressed me with his ability to grasp a concept, deliver what's asked and include additional refinements as well - all within the agreed deadline. In short, if you need a job done well and delivered on time, talk to Jon."

2009 - Present
Marketing Director
Firehouse Image Center

I returned to Firehouse as a designer and production technician. Firehouse then realized the opportunity to invest in a marketing strategy and I have been promoted to Marketing Director. Responsibilities include re-branding the company through website, collateral, trade show, etc. As the initial branding items are completed, the scope of the project will expand to include an eMarketing initiative.

I have also served in an IT capacity at Firehouse and worked through solutions to automate online ordering workflows as well as developing a cloud-based order tracking database which organizes thousands of orders each month both in the U.S. and Firehouse's Netherlands location.

2010 - Present
Freelance Art Director
ComplianceSigns.com

I was initially approached by a division of Compliance Signs in Illinois (Special Signs and Symbols Company) to create some illustrations for a signage project. That blossomed into more work for Compliance Signs' website. The company was looking to add visual interest and animation to each of their site pages as well as provide a stronger message to clients about their experience and qualifications. They wanted clients to have an immediate sense that they were in the right place and that Compliance Signs would be the best choice for their corporate signage.

As Compliance Signs continues to grow, our working relationship continues.

2009 - Present
Freelance Art Director
My First Bike Productions

I had worked with producer/director Justin Escue on projects for WoodWorks Films for several years. Because of that successful working relationship, we have continued to collaborate on a number of projects from film to comedy to iPhone apps.

A dream project for Justin is 500: The Spectacle Begins. As planned, this will be a feature-length film covering the running of the very first Indy 500. I created a teaser poster for this project with Justin's input.

La Mie Emilie

2008 - 2009
Art Director
Dynamic Graphics - Carmel, Indiana

Dynamic Graphics is an agency dedicated to two primary clients - BDI Marketing (now DBI Distribution) and Candy Dynamics. Both companies develop and market their separate line of products. BDI markets energy products and nutritional supplements and Candy Dynamics produces the Toxic Waste Hazardously Sour Candy line.

As Art Director, I was responsible for initiating product concepts, creating layouts for packaging & in-store displays, magazine ads, sell sheets & flyers, trade show displays, graphics & props, web graphics - including Flash animations & banners, corporate identity & branding and building 3D models for virtual product prototypes.

Dynamics Graphics was forced to cut staff due to the economic downturn in 2009.

2008
Freelance Art Director
Baker Realty Group

Tom Baker wanted a new corporate identity for Baker Realty Group. I worked with Tom to develop a new logo which reflected the type of larger, commercial projects the company was handling. The project then grew to encompass a new website, business cards & letterhead as well as brochures for their corporate properties.

2007 - 2008
Freelance Art Director
Wessex Press/Gasogene Books
Sanders Concrete
Oxygen Education

A selection of freelance projects. The first is an ongoing collaboration for Wessex Press. They are a small, independent publisher concentrating primarily on world of Sherlock Holmes. They had been selling their books through online Sherlock Holmes groups and trade shows and wanted a site to generate more sales. I created their website with hints of an old library card catalog. The site has their complete catalog and includes a PayPal shopping cart system. Wessex has produced two Sherlock Holmes conventions of their own which also required new websites to present the show guests, schedule and registration information.

Also included is a logo design for Sanders Concrete and a Flash graphic and animation done as a prerequisite for an employment opportunity for Oxygen Education.

2003 - 2006
Freelance Art Director
WoodWorks Films

WoodWorks was the brain child of Indianapolis native Gary Wood. Along with production partner Justin Escue, they put together a completely volunteer crew and shot their first film in the summer of 2003. The result was the award-winning Saving Star Wars. A parody about a father trying to fulfill his terminally ill son's wish to contact George Lucas and personally ask him to continue making Star Wars films. Comedy ensues as the father and his best friend "accidently" kidnap George Lucas. Dave (Darth Vader) Prowse also has a leading role.

I heard about the production on local radio and volunteered my design services. They readily accepted my offer and I was soon inundated with requests for everything from logos and business cards to multiple websites, actor photo shoots, on-location consulting and one-sheet posters.

I continued in that role for WoodWorks' second production, OPEN MIC'rs. It followed a varied group of stand-up comedians through a fictional comedy competition. The ensemble cast included Cindy (Caddyshack) Morgan, Hank McGill, Etta May and Dave Dugan. That led to the creation of a website for Cindy Morgan's Caddyshack Celebrity Golf Tournament in 2006.

2003
Freelance Art Director
Women's Specialty Health Centers, P.C.

This medical practice needed rebranding. Their former identity wasn't a good match, so Dr. McLaughlin contacted me and I met with him and his family who ran the facility. The relauched brand has a decidedly feminine touch and was carried through to business cards, letterhead, mailers and brochures. Even the office decor and wall treatments were changed to use the new color palette.

2002 - 2008
Graphics Specialist/Art Director
5MetaCom

5MetaCom (formerly The Majestic Group) is the largest agency in Indiana specializing in marketing technical and scientific products.

At 5MetaCom, I ran the gamut from concept and layout to production and proofing. I functioned as art director on projects that fell within my specific areas of expertise such as web, html and Flash. I also worked in conjunction with the senior art directors and realized their visions on both Mac and PC platforms.

Design work for 5MetaCom clients was always based on rigid brand standards. Furthermore, many of the products had to comply with government regulations which further dictated the look and content of the finished piece. It was always a challenge to create something fresh and interesting and still maintain the necessary templates to meet branding and regulatory compliance.

5MetaCom primarily utilized Adobe Creative Suite, QuarkXPress and Flash, however, clients also received finished layouts in Word and PowerPoint for their convenience, so I pushed the design limits of MS Office. I also researched, implemented and managed the job archiving and cataloging system which contained over 6,000 jobs.

2001 - 2005
Freelance Art Director
Branum Groups & Incentives
Grigsby & Associates

After PanAngling's closing, two colleagues started their own businesses. I was fortunate to be asked to design elements of their new corporate identities. Beth Grigsby only needed a new logo and business card, but Gregg Branum and I worked together for four years on his business needs. We maintained the same working relationship we shared at PanAngling. He'd put together huge company retreats and I would design EVERYTHING. Each trip required location brochures, pocket guides, itineraries, trip calendars, etc.

2000 - 2004
Freelance Art Director
Bader Company

When I first met Bob Bader in 2000, his company was working out of the same tiny strip center as PanAngling. They needed graphics assistance on a number of small projects. That blossomed into a couple ads. Next came national ads, followed by long-term national ad campaigns. After I left PanAngling, Bob continued to send work my way as they continued to grow. Flash forward to 2003 and Bob's wife Toni calls me asking advice about taking a very large step to the next level. I introduced her to one of the account executives at 5MetaCom and ushered them in as a new client. It was a thrill to watch the company blossom to the powerhouse it is today.

1999 - September 2001
Art Director
PanAngling Travel

PanAngling was a full-service travel agency specializing in outdoor adventures. The driving force behind this 26-year-old company was Pat Galyan who blazed a trail to the top of the retail industry with Galyan's Sporting Goods. I was personally hired by Mr. Galyan to facilitate the production of all design work in-house.

During my time as Art Director at PanAngling, I revamped the graphic identity of the company to the status of an industry leader. That plan was reflected in company logos, letterhead & business cards, numerous full-color catalogs, a bi-monthly adventure newsletter, print ads, website design, trade show displays, direct mail and corporate proposals.

As the one-man art department, I took all projects from concept to completion. My responsibilities included executing multiple design projects simultaneously, all layout & design work, photo selection and retouching, purchasing and maintaining hardware & software, press checks and managing & archiving graphics files.

PanAngling was forced to close due to the sharp and sudden decline in travel following September 11, 2001.

1989 - 1999
Art Director/Digital Imaging Manager
Firehouse Image Center

Firehouse has been in business for over 40 years. They have successfully made the difficult transition from commercial photo lab to large-format, digital imaging. In my initial 10 years with Firehouse, I progressed through every department in both the commercial photo lab and the digital imaging department. After establishing and troubleshooting each new output device in digital imaging, I was promoted to Digital Imaging Manager in 1996.

At Firehouse, I was personally responsible for all graphic design work for our clients (sell sheets, print ads, logo design, display booths and collateral) as well as production management, personnel (hiring, management and evaluation), tech support, software & hardware evaluations and purchases, inventory, cost management, equipment repair & maintenance, client support and job quoting.
